"Welcome to Mai Town Yoga"

"I have been practicing yoga since 2008 & teaching yoga since 2009. Yoga has provided me with the balance I needed in my life to finish losing massive amounts of weight saving my life from obesity. I lost right at 120 pounds from 2004-2009 & continuing my practice I’ve kept the weight off. I've also attempted to push past the mental & physical limits of my practice. As a Yoga practitioner & instructor I attempt the hard work of awareness & equanimity. Providing students with a challenging yet very safe immediate moment experience is paramount to my teaching style.

I teach Multiple Style Asana/Vinyasa Flow Beginner/All Level/Advanced Postures using a Yang or Yin energetic approach. This also includes but is not limited to, Meditation, Core Strengthening, Muscle Fiber Activation & Breathing Exercises.

If you were to ask me what yoga is I would say that yoga is strong medicine. Yoga is molding with constant time & pressure. & with all things... time & pressure will bring the change.

The Gift of teaching yoga comes from the opportunity to help change and transform lives. As yoga has helped me to transform and change my body, mind, heart, and therefore life, I wish to share with others the wisdom and understanding that yoga holds for each student. We learn through yoga, to connect more deeply with our bodies, our minds, and learn to consciously use our breath for greater awareness.  Through consistent practice we can not only build greater strength and flexibility in the physical body, but also internal strength and flexibility for our heart and mind. In turn, we are able to find balance, and harmony both on the mat and in our lives. Within each of us, is a wisdom that we begin to access through the practice of yoga. It is my intention and hope that each individual begins their own path and journey to experience that which lies within us all.

My journey with yoga happened by accident. In 2005, I was a graduate student who was writing a thesis, taking a full load of college courses, working full time, and having to balance my already hectic academic and professional life with the responsibilities of family, I was diagnosed with hypertension. I believed this diagnosis to be temporary and thought that my hypertension was due to the monumental amount of stress I was constantly under. In 2008, my diagnosis had not changed but my stress level had reduced greatly. It was then that my physician told me that I needed to find a way to relax; he suggested that I meditate. I tried to meditate, to quiet my mind, to breathe, to relax and I just could not. In the search for ways to get the body ready for meditation, I came across yoga on a Google search.

I took my first yoga class not knowing what to expect, not thinking I was flexible or strong enough. I just wanted to see if this ‘exercise’ could get me to relax. Not only did I find a way to relax inside the yoga room, I found that my mind and body loved it and I carried the relaxation with me throughout my day. In the initial classes that I took, we never meditated, we just did yoga – and that was enough to get me to my most relaxed state. Early 2010, my physician told me that I should continue to watch my blood pressure but that I had not had any elevated pressure the last six months. Today, I no longer have hypertension and I have never been healthier.
